The Importance of Tailoring: An Interview with H & Y Couture

The way a garment fits is directly parallel to how good you feel wearing it.  In the haze of trying on multiple dresses, searching for the perfect and most flattering, it is easy to become overwhelmed and frustrated. Wedding dress shopping should be neither, but instead, a fun experience with the bride and bridal party, friends and family. A great, and sometimes overlooked option, is tailoring. No more will you need to stress about a dress not fitting perfectly, because more times than most, the garment can be altered exactly to your body type and taste. Tailors are also skilled in translating your vision to reality. Their craft can help any dire situation become magic.  Read below for a one on one interview with H & Y Couture, a family owned business in McLean, Virginia who specialize in tailoring and creating original pieces.

Virginia Bride Magazine: What is your design and business philosophy?
H & Y Couture: To provide the highest quality possible! Since clothing is basically a tangible, visual representation of your identity and tastes, it’s important to portray that in the best way possible, whether it be by fit or style.
Virginia Bride Magazine: What sets you apart from other tailors that offer the same services?

H & Y Couture: Experience and quality–Henry (owner and head tailor/ designer) has been in the custom design and alterations business for around 25 years, and so he has handled and solved a variety of issues that emerge for women who are trying to find and fit the perfect wedding dress. For the custom design process especially, this extent of experience is extremely important because Henry is able to guide you through the numerous components of a wedding dress–from overall design to fabric to trimming, he is able to offer a great deal of knowledge when making these decisions.

Virginia Bride Magazine: Why is having a tailored garment so important? Especially on a wedding day.

H & Y Couture:  You want to look your absolute best on your wedding day as it is one of the most important days of a person’s life–every person in the room will be watching the bride and a well-fitted, tailored garment is essential in doing so. This applies to the wedding party also, along with the mother of the bride or groom.

Virginia Bride Magazine: Any advice for selecting dresses for the wedding day- wedding dress, bridesmaid, mother of the bride, etc…

H & Y Couture: Make sure the design flatters the specific person. Even if you love a dress and everything about its aesthetics appeals to you, if it does not flatter your individual body, do not get it.
