The early 2000s was prime time for some of the best wedding rom-coms: The Wedding Planner, My Big Fat Greek Wedding, Just Married. This decade also boasted some of the most popular celebrity weddings and TV weddings. Monica and Chandler wed in a 2001 Friends episode; Cory and Topanga’s wedding from Boy Meets World aired in 1999. This time was FULL of iconic weddings to use as a guide, so let’s dive in.
Trend 1: Strapless Satin Wedding Gowns
In 2000, strapless wedding gowns became very popular with the decline of church weddings. Additionally, shiny fabrics, like satin were very much in style.
Does this trend hold up in 2025? Yes! While there’s a new take on this trend today, strapless satin wedding gowns certainly are back in style.
Trend 2: Dyed Shoes
Many brides and bridesmaids purchased shoes and had them dyed to match their dress or wedding colors.
Did this trend make a reappearance in the 2020s? Negative.
Unfortunately, dyable shoes are a thing of the past. Now, brides tend to reach for simple white heels with pearl or diamond embellishments.
Trend 3: Disposable Cameras
After Monica & Chandler’s iconic wedding, disposable cameras popped up on guest tables across the country.
Did this trend make a come back? Duh! Disposable cameras are definitely making a come back! As spin-off trends, photo booths and apps that make pictures sharable are also super popular.
Trend 4: Cupcakes
Carrie Bradshaw began the rise of the cupcake trend when she visited Magnolia Bakery in the famous 2000 episode of Sex and the City. Many brides embraced this trend through the 2010s.
Is it still around? Ehhh….
Some brides are still choosing the cupcake route, while others are going for a simplistic small tiered cake. The consensus: cupcakes are still around, but the craze may be over.
Trend 5: Rice Exit
The grand exit for many couples involved guests throwing rice or bird seed while the newlyweds ran to their get away car.
Does this trend hold up in 2025? Nope.
Nowadays, sparklers, glow sticks, and confetti are popular grand exits.
